JAKARTA, 16 August 2026 — A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday, killing at least 51 people and injuring more than 110, according to the latest reports from Indonesian authorities.
The earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara province, with the epicentre located off the northern coast of Flores. Indonesia’s meteorological agency, BMKG, recorded the earthquake at magnitude 7.7.
The shallow earthquake caused widespread damage across several areas, including collapsed and damaged homes, landslides and disruptions to roads, electricity and communications.
Thousands evacuated
Around 5,000 people have been evacuated from affected areas, with thousands taking shelter in temporary locations. More than 1,300 homes have reportedly been damaged, while landslides have blocked roads and complicated rescue operations.
Emergency teams, including military and police personnel, have been deployed to assist with rescue and relief efforts. Some previously inaccessible areas are now being reached as authorities work to clear blocked roads.
Tsunami warning lifted
The earthquake initially triggered a tsunami warning for parts of eastern Indonesia.
BMKG later reported that small tsunami waves had been detected at several locations, including Maurole in Ende, where a wave of about 0.94 metres was recorded. The tsunami warning was subsequently lifted.
Aftershocks continue
Hundreds of aftershocks have been recorded following the main earthquake. Authorities are continuing to monitor seismic activity while emergency teams assess damage and search affected areas.
The full scale of the damage is still being assessed, and officials have warned that casualty figures could change as rescue teams reach more remote communities.
