KUALA LUMPUR, 16 August 2026 — Malaysia’s impressive ASEAN Hyundai Cup campaign has reached a crucial stage as the Harimau Malaya take on defending champions Vietnam in the first leg of the semi-final.
Malaysia finished second in Group B with nine points, winning three of their four group matches. Their campaign included victories over Myanmar, Laos and the Philippines, with their only defeat coming against Thailand.
The 1–0 victory over the Philippines on 8 August secured Malaysia’s place in the last four, with Pavithran Gunalan scoring the decisive goal.
Tonight’s semi-final, however, presents a much bigger challenge. Vietnam entered the knockout stage as Group A winners and defending champions, having collected 10 points from four group matches.

Vietnam took the lead in first-half stoppage time, with Rafaelson finding the net in the 45+5th minute. Malaysia now have the second half to fight their way back into the tie.
The second leg will be played in Hanoi on 19 August, meaning Malaysia will need to stay within touching distance tonight before travelling to Vietnam for the return fixture.
