
KOTA KINABALU, 22 August 2026 — Passengers aboard an AirAsia flight from Kota Kinabalu to Shanghai were left dealing with an unpleasant situation shortly before landing after a passenger reportedly defecated in her seat.
Flight AK1516 departed Kota Kinabalu on 18 August and arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport in the early hours of 19 August. Reports said the incident occurred around 40 minutes before landing, when passengers noticed a strong odour spreading through the cabin.
According to passenger accounts, the woman was travelling with two children and reportedly said she was feeling unwell. The aircraft’s lavatories were reportedly still available at the time.
AirAsia confirmed that a hygiene-related incident occurred in the cabin during preparations for landing. Cabin crew carried out initial cleaning using gloves and towels while prioritising the safe landing of the aircraft.
After landing, the aircraft underwent further cleaning and disinfection before the next flight. AirAsia also said the crew operating the return flight were briefed about the situation.
The incident reportedly left passengers dealing with the unpleasant odour for about 40 minutes before landing.
